Dear God,
You truly are the Worst Idea Ever.
Because of You, millions have gone to war.
Millions have died. because of You.
People torture In Your Name.
They inflict cruelty and suffering In Your Name.
And You know the worst thing?
These killers, these torturers, they sleep peacefully at night
Because of You.
You give us False Hope.
When it works out, you steal the success for Yourself.
When it doesn’t, we shoulder all the blame.
Instead of responding to Injustice,
You say, “It’ll be better in the next life”.
Or even worse, You say we will Burn Forever.
That’s a nice touch, God.
Because of You, whole groups of people
Come in second place,
Or third place, or forever last.
You don’t much like difference, do you God?
But money, power and privilege? Ah. That’s different.
Now I know your holy people say otherwise
But we all know how it works out.
So do us all a favour.
We can get by just fine without You.
We can sort out our own problems.
We can talk. We can compromise.
We can understand.
We can dream.
By listening to ourselves, and less to You,
We’ve made things better.
We’ve brought light to dark places.
And comfort for crying eyes.
You know what?
We can take it From Here.
So do us all a favour, God.
And begone.
You were never a Great Idea in the first place.
Excellent!
Religion is the worst thing that ever happened to humanity – and it’s getting worse.
Hi Joe, indeed. Unfortunately we’re probably hardwired to believe in such things. It doesn’t make it right, though.
So imagine if someone went out and robbed a bank, and then blamed you for it.
Surely you would think it grossly unjust for the police to arrest you for the crime.
The atheist commits the same kind of injustice by blaming God for the evil that men do.
Joe,
It is obvious that every civilization in human history grew up around religion.
No religion = No civilization.
Atheist regimes who have usurped political have proven this by committing genocide as a routine tool of state craft.
The fact that you talk about atheists blaming god shows that you haven’t the foggiest idea what atheism is about. Maybe you should read up on it first before you comment.
Colm,
Read the post. This is an example of an atheist blaming God for the evil that men do.
I *wrote* the post! This is me saying that the whole idea is a really bad one, because of how it’s been interpreted by some of its most fervent followers. Sorry to have had to spell it out to you.
Colm,
Here is you arguing with yourself and losing:
“Because of You, millions have gone to war.
Millions have died. because of You.
People torture In Your Name.”
That’s you blaming God for the evil that men do.
So, there’s this guy, and he gets a bad idea into his head that, say, gay people are terrible. So he goes out one night, finds a gay man and beats him up. What this man has done is evil, for sure; but if he didn’t have this bad idea in his head in the first place, would he have so readily gone out to cause evil?
Unfortunately, such has been the case with many people down the ages, from all sorts of religions, who professed absolute faith in their god, and used what they understood of their god to justify their behaviour.
Colm,
Each of us is responsible for our own actions no matter where we get our ideas.
If someone else is responsible for the evil that we do, then we are slaves, not free men.
Consequently, the atheists illuminates more of the moral catastrophe that is atheism:
Someone else is always to blame so we are never responsible for our own actions.
“Someone else is always to blame so we are never responsible for our own actions.” Quite untrue, but each to his own. As I said earlier, you don’t understand how non religious people see the world. You think you do, but you don’t.
You see, I cannot blame a being I don’t believe in. It would be like blaming Santa Claus. But I can use it as a figure of speech in my writing if I so wish. Instead of saying ” You”, I could say “This idea” but somehow, it’s less snappy.
Apparently you’re not allowed to write a poem from an atheist viewpoint without someone interpreting it too literally and saying “See! See! Atheists blame God!”
*headdesk*
Well, I liked your poem, anyway.
Thank you Midori. I thought the first line might be a give away, but alas.. 🙂
Colm,
In the first sentence of your post, you make a claim, that God is the worst idea, EVER.
In the rest of your post you support your claim by blaming God for the evil that men.
You blame God for the evil that men do, therefore God is a bad idea.
Why do you deny your own words and ideas?
So much effort to tell you what you’re saying and thinking.
Yep, and completely ignoring the point I was making. Not much point continuing in such cases.
Agreed
