I got to see CBS Evening News last night. It featured a lot of coverage of the Iowa Caucus and the snowstorms on the US west coast. At the end of the program was a longish feature on a 7 year old boy who was about to climb Kilimanjaro. “If you put your mind to it, you can do anything” he said to us all. Aww bless.
No mention however of Kenya, and the huge struggle for democracy going on there at the moment. It’s been the number one news item for the rest of the world over the last few days, where a positive result to this crisis might issue in a new era in African politics. A negative result, on the other hand, could cause the biggest humanitarian crisis since Rwanda.
A little boy climbing Kilimanjaro was more newsworthy, apparently.
It depends on what you listen to. NPR (National Public Radio) has been all over this situation on the hour. However, I don’t think I could recommend getting involved. Do they have oil?
Phred
Involvement doesn’t necessarily mean that one needs to send in troops Phred.
It might simply mean to help mediate between the parties and come to a solution to the problem without the need for violence.
And No Kenya hasn’t got any oil…
I won’t ask where Phred is from but not from the same shores as either Woodpigeon our myself.
It’s true – NPR is excellent. It’s the only radio station I ever tuned in to when in the US. I sometimes even listen to it in Ireland over the internet.
And Phred, as I know well, is a son of the world. He is best summed up by Steven Fry’s comment about Oscar Wilde – “one must take the serious things in life trivially, and the trivial things in life seriously”
